Susanta Mandal was born in 1965 in Kolkata. Susanta Mandal studied painting at both the Government College of Arts and Craft in Kolkata (BFA, 1990) and the Benares Hindu University (MFA, 1993) and today lives in New Delhi. Originally trained as a painter, but since then has branched out into more conceptual installation-based work. Mandal has exhibited widely in India and around Asia. He is currently part of the Layout Artists’ Collective.
For the biennale, artist Susanta Mandal has worked with soap bubbles to create kinetic sculptures where steel and mechanical elements frame an unfolding drama of effervescence. His three sculptural installations at historical Aspinwall House here are based on the simple premise of the interaction of air with water and soap salts.
