Ustad Sultan Khan's rendering of a
Bruj( Bruj Bhasha) song from UttarPradesh sets the musical ecstasy
into motion."Katna hi Raat more Piya To Hori Kaaran" just lifts
one to dizzy heights as Sultan Khan passionately sings about a woman
yearning for her lover,finding it quiet difficult to beat the long
hours of an overcast night.
Sultan Khan is a world renowned Sarangi
exponent and of late he has been proving his mastery in singing
too. His magnetic voice is a rich blend of intense passion and spirituallity.
Ustadji has in the past associated with George Harrison,Madona and
Tavilin singh. Salim and Sulaiman Merchant were inspired to do this
album after being drawn by the sheer intensity and spontaneity of
Indian folksongs combined with simplicity of melody and verse. Each
song is distinctive to its origin. The blend of the modern key boards
S FX talk drums and traditional instruments creates an enchanting
musical halo which ever lulls even after repeated listening. Though
each song is mellifluous , those that really haunts are " O Majhee
Re" -a Bengali Baul song; Khuno Khuno- an Assamese song,Thale Diya
Male Diya- a Rajasthani gypsy song and the lovely Rajashani lullaby-SO
Ja Re sung by Shubha Mudgal.
