"Mambazhakalam" is the story of a young man who sacrifices his own personal life for the sake of his family.

Mohanlal plays Puthenpurackal Chandran, a forty plus years old gulf returnee. He has made a lot of money by working 20 years or so in the Middle East. Now he is living with his mother (Kaviyoor Ponnamma), sister (Poornima), her family, three younger brothers ( Baiju, Sudhish and Vishnu). Chandran has taken care of his family all his life and he never had a chance to think about himself. Now everyone wants him to marry and settle down.

One day he happens to meet Indira (Sobhana) one of his old crush. Indira is in town on a vacation with her10 year old daughter. She is a divorcee working in Bangalore. She was married to Raghuram (Anil Aditya), her family doctor. On her wedding night Indira finds out that Raghuram already has a wife and daughter. He, a drug addict is now serving time in jail for killing his first wife and Indira is looking after his daughter.

Chandran likes Indira and he feels very sorry for her. Indira's daughter is possessive about her and hates Chandran's presence in their life. Meanwhile Indira's ex- hubby comes out on bail and creates an issue in Chandran's house. This causes a misunderstanding and his family turns against the relationship. Will they be united? See the movie to catch the rest of the story.

Movie has a lot of similarity with the film "Balettan". Veteran director Joshy picks up the same old theme "Elder brother sacrificing his life for the family", and tries to make a good movie out of it. Repetition of the same family sentiments doesn't work again and again. So the movie has no novelty. Though Mohanlal puts up a decent performance, the superstar aura often overpowers the actor in him. Sobhana is good in her role, there is nothing much to do for an actress of her caliber. As a pair they look good on screen. Songs by Jayachandran are melodious. If you haven't seen "Balettan", you should see this one.

We rate this movie Average.
