Rishtey
Cast
: Anil Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Amrish Puri, Shilpa Shetty, Master Jibraan Khan
Director
: Indra Kumar
Music
: Sanjeev-Darshan
Script
: Rajiv Kaul, Praful Parekh

'Rishtey' the movie, as the title aptly implies deals with relationships. It touches emotions of love, mistrust, compassion, callousness, laughter and sadness.

The film opens showing the life of a father and son, Suraj (Anil Kapoor) and Karan (Master Jibraan Khan) who have a beautiful relationship. Although they have everything, there is a wife/mother figure missing in their life.

Komal (Karisma Kapoor) who is that figure stays with her rich and scheming father Yashpal Chaudhary (Amrish Puri). How Komal and Suraj get estranged is shown in flashback. Suraj from a middle class family falls for the rich girl Komal. When her father opposes to the relationship, she walks out and they get married. Everything goes smoothly till she is invited to a wedding in her family. There her father pretends to forgive her and she in turn invites her father to meet her husband. But her world turns upside down as she enters her apartment and finds another woman wearing her clothes and claiming to share her husband. With this incident she leaves Suraj and goes back to her father. There she delivers a baby boy. Though her callous father tries to destroy the baby, Suraj saves his baby and flees with him to a far off place.

Years later Karisma spots them together and she wants her son back much to the chagrin of both father and son ..there ensues a legal battle between them. A third angle to the story is Vyjanthi ( Shilpa Shetty) a fisherwoman who is in love with Suraj.

A typical Bollywood fare with the melodrama, the stunts and the works.. Although some sequences have been deftly handled, the film lacks the impact of Indra Kumars earlier movies like Dil, Beta, Mann etc. The father - son relationship has some tender moments. Music by Sanjeev-Darshan disappoints, but cinematography by Baba Azmi is good.

Anil Kapoor deals his emotional scenes well but his role as a boxer who bashes up heavy wrestlers is unbelievable. Karisma looks good and performs well but one gets a feeling she's been doing the same kind of role over and over again. Master Jibraan Khan is a natural and Shilpa Shetty is good with her comic one-liners.

Impressive in parts, the movie on the whole is just an average fare.
