Kamal Hassan's Mumbai Express is a comedy of errors released simultaneously
in Tamil and Hindi languages.
A couple on the brink of a divorce, a husband whose wife ill-treats
him, an Italy-returned pompous dude, a pregnant ai
rhostess who has just rejected a pilot's sympathetic shoulder, an army
man who wants to get remarried when his son is just out of his honeymoon...
A gang including Pasupathi, Vaiyapuri/Vijay raaz, Ramesh Aravind and
Kovai Sarala embark on a plan to make quick money. They need one more
man to carry out their strategy. They decide on Avinash (Kamal Hassan)
a bike stunt specialist in a circus who is half deaf and is against
crime. He is the brother of one in the gang and he has no choice but
to accept their plan. Avinash is called the Mumbai Express for his stunning
deeds.
As
they get on with their plan they make a grave mistake. They kidnap the
wrong person, instead of the rich Chettiar's son they had planned on.
They kidnap the young illegitimate son (Hardik) born in an alliance
between the ACP (Om Puri/Nasser) and an ex bar girl (Manisha Koirala).
Avinash has a change of heart and takes off alone with the kid. Life
with the young boy has a great effect on Avinash's life. He begin to
change and emerges wiser in the end.
Technically the film as expected is superb. But it lacks the edge
that usually make Kamal's movies smash hits. The story, screenplay and
the dialogues are done by Kamal himself. The dialogues take up most
of the narration, sometimes overriding the characters and the situations
themselves. The happenings of the unorganized crime are narrated comically
but the ending seem sudden. Music by Ilayaraja, cinematography by Siddharth,
sets and action are good.
Performances of the cast are noteworthy especially that of Kamal and
Ompuri. Manisha in her small role looks good and performs okay. The
kid is just ok.
Overall the movie is good but not up to Kamal's earlier hits.
