Shot primarily by an all women crew, 'Mitr- My friend' is the directorial debut of the actress Revathy Menon.

The story is about an Indian family settled in California for the past 18 years and brings out the dearth of emotional satisfaction they face in a materialistic world. The family includes the couple Pritvi (Nasir Abdullah) and Lakshmi (Shobhana) and their 17 year old daughter Divya (Preeti Vissa). Lakshmi born and brought  up in a small town in India, lives for her husband and daughter. She gives her self to her family, but as her daughter grows up there arises differences between them. Their beliefs contradict.

Divya drops out of college and decide to live alone. Lakshmi cannot understand or comprehend  her daughters inkling for freedom while her daughter cannot tolerate her old fashioned traditions and interference in her life. Lakshmi's anxiety goes overboard to the point of eavesdropping on her daughters conversations. Even Pritvi fails to understand her personal needs and concern for her daughter and doesn't give her any moral support.

The father and daughter share a good relationship. Lakshmi feels alienated and lonely. Their indifference to her needs makes her think of herself for the first time in 18 years. Here the electronic mail comes to her rescue. A chance meet with a Mitr (friend) in a chat room, whom she can confide,  changes her life over. Her strange friend speaks her language, advises her and even values her advice. Lakshmi develops new interests and transforms into a new personality, from a meek housewife to a strong women leading her own life.

The sensitivity of the movie lies in the identity of her strange Mitr (Friend). The film ends on a positive note when Lakshmi's 'Mitr' turns out to be none other than her husband Pritvi. When they realise how they could share their innermost thoughts and be close confidants, they come to accept each other. Divya returns home for good.

All three of them Sobhana, Nasir Abdullah and Preeti Vissa have done their part well. Sobhana has given a sensitive portrayal of the typical housewife. Her eyes express her emotions well. Even though dubbing is not good, the film has its good moments. For a first film, Revathy has churned out a decent movie in spite of the shortfalls.

We give it a fair rating.
