Jurm

Director

Jurm by Vikram Bhatt is yet another story of deceit and betrayal in marriage, narrated before in Hindi films.

The otherwise perfect world of Avinash Malhotra (Bobby Deol), a business tycoon in Mumbai turns upside down when his wife Sanjana (Lara Dutta) gets murdered in their farmhouse. All the more he is accused of committing the murder in a drunken stupor and is arrested.

His friend and legal adviser Rohit Saxena (Milind Soman) takes up his case. The body is missing and Avinash cannot remember doing the devious crime. As the case proceeds Avinash finds that he cannot prove his innocence. His finger prints on the murder weapon works against him. Moreover a witness (Shakti Kapoor) appears at the last moment and testifies against him. Avinash is sentenced to lifetime imprisonment.

Avinash is shattered and his only support in the ordeal is his ardent but secret admirer Sonia (Gul Panag). He decides to break out of jail and get the real culprit. Rohit helps him out but Avinash is in for a shock of his life ...what follows is the revelation of betrayal, and the subsequent revenge.

Vikram Bhatt narrates a tale told before in Fida, Humraaz etc. The film is shot very stylishly with good action and okay music. The first half recounting Rohit and Sanjana's relationship, their marriage, her subsequent murder and his arrest, till the interval is interesting but afterwards it becomes downright predictable. The director reveals the suspense too early, moreover the protagonists escape from prison, his journey to Malaysia and the chase for the culprits leaves much to be desired.

Bobby Deol presents a reasonably good performance. Lara Dutta and Milind Soman are okay in their roles. Gul Panag performs well. Overall the film has an interesting first half, which fails to keep up momentum in the second.

We rate the movie as an average fare.
