In spite of the bad treatments he got from his peers, he managed to
make friends like Munna (Sachin Khedekar). But when he accidentally commits
a murder as a teenager, he ends up being in the underworld crime gang
bigger than even his father. Rohit along with his friends (Sachin Khedekar
and Sharad Kapoor) become one of the leading hit men of Mumbai. People
close to Rohit, like his grandmother Shanta ( Reema Lagoo) and his father's
best friend (Deepak Tijori) tries to reform him but does not succeed.
At one point Rohit gets romantically involved with Gauri (Shilpa Shetty).
They get married and have a daughter. Due to some misunderstanding, Gauri
leaves Rohit and goes and stays with Munna, whom she considers a brother.
When Rohit came to know about this, he kills his best friend Munna in
a fit of jealous rage. After this incident Rohit's life gets more and
more messy. When he realises his mistake, he starts drinking heavily and
loses interest in life...
While 'Vaastav' defined the theme 'A man who lives by the gun dies by
the gun', Hathyar confirms it. Director Manjrekar succeeds to some extent
in bringing out the everyday life of an underworld gangster but he fails
to make the same impact as the original. The movie has too many episodes
that does not fit well together and the theme relies too heavily on blood
and action.
Sanjay Dutt has performed very well in his role. As a 'Gangster' he had
proven many times that he is good and he breathes life into the character.
Shilpa Shetty looks good and does well especially in her outburst when
Rohit kills Munna. All the character artistes has performed well especially
Sachin Khedekar, Deepak Tijori, Reema Lagoo and Namrata Shirodkar. The
music is kind of mediocre. On the other hand cinematography by Vijay Arora
and the action sequences by Mahendra Varma is excellent.
Its definitely not a family movie but worth a watch for those who like
movies of this genre for superb performances and fast paced action sequences.
