'Yes' is an erotic love story about an Irish American scientist and her
exiled Lebanese lover living in London.
Joan Allen plays an Irish American molecular biologist struck in a loveless
marriage to a philandering husband (Sam Neil). Simon Abkarian plays a Lebanese
doctor living in exile in London who is working as a cook in an embassy kitchen.
Allen and Abkarian are the nameless lovers, referred as "She" and
"He" in the film.
As a high flying scientist She is sure that life has more to offer. At an
embassy party, She meets He and they are sexually attracted to each other. Her
flirtations and his voracious sexual longing for her tender body start a
passionate and romantic love affair. They talk in rhymes, like" Our love is
great, So, let's go mate". But as soon as he starts to bring out his
chauvinistic pride their romance starts to fade. They start to blame each other
for their own pitfalls.
As an Arab man, He is very proud of his noble ancestry and, as an prominent
scientist She is proud of her achievements. As a Muslim in love with a white
blonde woman, their relationship is a finite testing point for their cultural
differences. They forget the basic thing that both of them are trying to find a
safe haven through their love affair, She from her terrible marriage and He from
his isolated life. Find out more about these love birds and see what happens to
their relationship...
Sally Potter, a creative director, passionately narrates a bold and fearless
drama with sensational brilliance. She presents the dialogues in verses that
gives a romantic touch to the love story. She tries to deliver a message to the
world that blind love can conquer religious differences as well as personal prejudices
and brings out the fact that the freedom of Western women will be severely
curtailed by getting married to Muslim men. The director shows the courage to
bring up a film in the present world situation, with a theme of an immigrant
Muslim man in love with an affluent, married American woman.
Joan Allen and Simon Abkarian present an excellent performance. Both of them
very well portray the paranoia about cultural stereotypes. The frustrations of
an immigrant trying to adapt to the Western ways is nicely shown. It is a
fascinating love story that touches some of the hot issues of the modern day
world. The movie shows us the terrible division that usually pull people apart
on the basis of religion and culture. With an unusual story of a forbidden
romance, the film is definitely an entertainer.
We rate this movie GOOD.
