IInspired by a true story, it is an interwoven tale of adoption.
The movie follows three different stories that took place in the years 1999,
2000 and 2001. To start with Mark (Kip Pardue) a young goofer arrives in Kure
Beach, North Carolina in order to save the vanishing loggerhead turtles. Mark meets George (Michael Kelly) a local motel owner
who gives him a room to stay. Both of them happen to be gay men. But Mark discloses that he is HIV positive,
that puts a temporary stop to George's sexual advances. As Mark opens up more,
these two men become close friends.
The following year, 2000, in Eden, North Carolina, Elizabeth (Tess Harper), the wife of a minister's wife confront her husband (Chris
Sarandon) regarding
their son who is a homosexual. Their son ran away from their home because of the pressure from that conservative
society. The parents are having a hard time explaining their son's predicament to their neighbors
as well as to the small community that they live in.
In the year 2001,Grace(Bonnie Hunt) an attractive, middle aged woman, who works as an airport car rental agent quits her job and returns to her
hometown Asheville, North Carolina, to stay with her widowed mother. Years ago just
because of the pressure from her mother, Grace had given up her baby that she had out of wedlock at the age of
17. Now Grace wants her child back and she begins a search. But the adoption privacy laws of
North Carolina
prohibits Grace to search for her child given up years ago.
All these episodes took place in three consecutive years during the Mother's Day
weekend in different parts of North Carolina. The connection between these three
tales can be realized very fast and the audience can very well follow the dilemma
of each character.
Director Tim Kirkman boldly narrates a controversial tale with an unusual charm.
The stories take place in small communities and Kirkman successfully interconnect
each story. He draws good performance out of the cast.
Tess Harper as Elizabeth and Bonnie Hunt as Grace present very good performance.
The whole story focuses on Elizabeth and Grace. Michael Kelly as George presents
a touching performance.
Even though the movie has it own flaws, it is a kind of warm film. It deals with
adoption rights, religious tolerance as well as homosexuality. As a whole it is a
touching story.
We rate this movie ABOVE AVERAGE.
