A romantic comedy, it is a delightful tale of first love of two 11 year
old kids living in Manhattan.
Eleven year old fifth grader Gabe Burton (Josh Hutcherson) lives in
the Upper West Side of Manhattan with his father Adam (Bradley Whitford)
and mother Leslie (Cynthia Nixon). His parents had been separated for
more than a year but they still share the same apartment until their
divorce papers are finalized.
Gabe hangs around with his friends, play basketball and ride the scooter
around the city streets. But his life changes when he joins a karate
class and was paired with Rosemary Telesco (Charlie Ray) as his partner,
whom he has known since kindergarten. For Gabe it was love at first
sight and he is badly smitten. During summer, Gabe locates Rosemary's
apartment and takes a ride to her place on his scooter and meets her.
Between karate classes and sharing ice-cream corns they develop a good
bonding. She introduces him to her parents and takes him to a flower
girl dress fitting. He really adores her and is in love.
As
the summer days pass by, Rosemary announces that she is going away from
Manhattan to a camp and possibly was going to change school when she
comes back. Gabe is practically heartbroken but he devices some plans
to keep their love blooming. Find out more about these young lovebirds.
First time filmmaker Mark Levin narrates a beautiful story of young
love. He pays good attention to the "Kids World", what they do, what
they talk about and their life in general. He successfully presents
the tale of 11 year olds as seen through the eyes of an adult. It is
emotionally resonant and sweetly sentimental. The picturesque tour of
Manhattan with the familiar places like Central Park and many skyscrapers
are wonderful.
Josh Hutcherson as Gabe presents an excellent performance. He portray
the passion, the feelings as well as his infatuation with Rosemary very
well. The agony of a heartbroken young lover is well enacted. Charlie
Ray as Rosemary presents a great performance. She is beautiful and graceful.
Film could be marked as a story of puppy love but it deals with the
anxiety of young kids in love very well, like the first crush, first
kiss and the first heartbreak. This family friendly film with an emotionally
vibrant tale is suitable for youngsters, teenagers as well as adults.
We rate this movie VERY GOOD.
