Based on the novel by James Siegel, it is a thriller drama of adultery and infidelity.
Charles Schine (Clive Owen) a Chicago ad agency executive and his wife
Deanna (Melissa George) are staying married just for the sake of their
sick daughter who is awaiting for a kidney transplant. One day Charlie
misses his regular train to the city and meets beautiful Lucinda Harris
(Jennifer Aniston) on the next train. She is seductive and attractive,
as well as a high flying financial advisor. She also has a boring married
life and got a daughter of her own.
After a casual flirtation, they decided to get together for lunch, which
extended to an evening drink together and they ended up checking into a cheap motel and had a passionate
one night stand. While having sex in the hotel room, they were attacked by an armed
robber, Laroche (Vincent Cassel) who took all the money from Charlie's wallet and brutally raped Lucinda.

In order to
keep their affair a secret, both Lucinda and Charlie decided not to report
the incident to the police and they returned to their own homes. But Laroche
found this as an opportunity to milk some money from Charlie and began
to throw blackmailing threats at Charlie. Initially Charlie gave him some
money but as the demanding amount started to escalate, Charlie decided
to stand up and fight back. In order to stop Laroche through a legal source
like police and court, Charlie needed Lucinda's cooperation and her testimony,
but Lucinda refused to do so. Find out what is going to happen to Charlie
and Lucinda as well as their adulterous relationship.
The first English language film by the Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom
is an unusual thriller story. He failed to let the characters grow with
the story and ended up creating a boring film that didn't use much imagination
at all. But the message he is trying to deliver to the audience is a strong
one, like " If you plan to have an adulterous relationship don't have
it in a cheap motel".
Well known actress Jennifer Aniston presents a boring performance as Lucinda.
She should stick with her TV serials and stay away from box office films. Clive Owen puts
up a decent show as Charlie. Together they don't have much chemistry and their lustful affair
doesn't produce much applause.
Right from the beginning the movie is running on the wrong rail and ends up going
off the track and being "Derailed" - the title of the film suits it perfectly. The development of the plot from scene to scene is very dull and
ridiculously slow. If you are a fan of Jennifer Aniston or Clive Owen, go and see it.
