It is a Scottish drama, tale of a single mother in dilemma who had to take drastic steps to cover a lie that she told her 9 year old son.

Set in a small Scottish port town of Greenock, 9 year old Frankie (Jack McElhone) is a deaf boy and Lizzie (Emily Mortimer) is his mother. Frankie, his mother and grandmother have been moving from one town to another in order to escape the grasp of Lizzie's abusive ex-husband. Lizzie is always afraid of her ex-husband's return. Now they have moved to a coastal town of Scotland and Lizzie gets a job at a fish and chips shop.

Little Frankie is deaf and can barely speak. But he is very bright, intelligent and quick. The boy doesn't know about his mother's fear and why they kept moving from place to place. Lizzie has told him that his dad is a sailor on a ship named ACCRA. Frankie has been writing letters to dad very diligently and he tracks his dad's journey constantly on a huge wall map. He gets replies to his mails but one thing Frankie doesn't know, is that, it is his mother who is writing back to him as if they were from his dad.

One day they came to know that a ship named ACCRA is going to dock at the latest town that they have moved in. Now, Lizzie has two choices either confess to Frankie about her lie or find a sailor to impersonate her son's estranged father. She is in a real dilemma. Instead of owing up, she decided to hire a nameless sailor (Gerard Butler) to pretend to be Frankie's dad for a day. For her, it was just a business deal with no strings attached. But Lizzie's decision leads to many more complications like Frankie falls in love with this guy and he finds his love reciprocated by this stranger. Now, Lizzie is in big trouble. Find out more about this tender and touching drama.

First time feature director Shona Averbach, masterfully narrates a touching sentimental drama with charisma and beauty. She definitely has great talent to make a successful movie at the very first shot. The keen eyed director could become a great new talent in filmmaking.

Beautiful Emily Mortimer presents an excellent performance as Lizzie. Her fear of her ex-husband as well as her love for Frankie are very well portrayed. She handles her role very realistically. She is strong and confident as a loving mother, at the same time she is a scared little kitten inside. Jack McElhone as Frankie makes a commendable performance. His feelings are real and he handles the part brilliantly. As a deaf boy his role is very touching and sensitive. His vulnerability at school as well as home is very well portrayed. Gerard Butler is great as the nameless sailor. Most of the other characters present a good performance and felt real.

It is a well directed, well acted movie without any clichés. Even though the story ends without giving answers to many of the questions, it is a lovely film filled with many moments of tenderness and feelings of a mother's sacrifice to protect her only child from the dangers of her violent ex-husband. Movie has a very powerful ending strong enough to make you cry.

We rate this movie GOOD.
