A complex psychological
thrilling drama that deals with the corruption in TV journalism.
John Leguizamo
plays Manolo Bonilla, a reporter for Miami based TV network, who travel to Ecuador to
interview the relatives and friends of three local children raped and murdered
by a serial killer named "Monster of Babahoyo". Manolo was expecting
to come up with a sensational story.
Vinicio Cepeda (Damian Alcazar), a travelling Bible salesman happen
to be in the same town in Ecuador during the funeral of the three dead
children. Vinicio's car accidently hits a young boy and kills him. The
town's people brutally beat Vinicio almost to death, which is a normal
practice in uncivilized countries. He is imprisoned for manslaughter
and is put in a jail.
In the meantime
Manolo came out as a star reporter and a hero with sensational stories
of the incidents going on in Eucador. More over he started an affair
with Marisa, his producer and wife of the station manager. Vinicio contacted
Manolo and asked for his help to get out from jail, in turn he offers
to give him inside information about Monster of Babahoyo. He also reveals
to Manolo that he had met the killer and know about other victims buried
at the same graveyard where those three children are buried.
Instead of informing the
police, Manolo conducts his own investigation and try to become a glorified
hero. He forgets all about ethics and morality, and to become a champion
utilizes the one and only opportunity of a lifetime.
Talented director
Sebastian Cordero skillfully narrates the story of a corrupt TV journalist in a
corrupt country. He keeps the flow of the movie at a brisk pace. Even though the
film is loosely taken, it covers a complex story and moral issues very well.
John
Leguizamo presents an excellent performance as the TV reporter. This is best role
he has ever played. With intense acting, he keeps the audience anxious about his next
action. As a crime thriller the film is a good entertainer. It has very well
covered the corrupt practices in corrupt countries.
We rate this movie GOOD.
