This film directed by Kamal falls into the category of a serious art film which has been proved by the National awards that it has received. But unlike the usual award movies, it is also appealing to everyday moviegoers.

As the name suggests, it revolves around winds which is a constant feature in the movie, sometimes mild, sometimes harsh but ever present and some simple souls who live in the little village where it flows constantly. The village has a school, a few teachers and students and their families who live in the area.

The villain in the movie is a local hooligan, Kattumakkan, who has been jailed for murder. These antisocial elements desecrate the school at regular intervals. And these events increase in frequency when the villain is released from prison on parole.

The hero is introduced as a schoolteacher, Vishnu (Biju Menon) who moves to the area with his two young children. The story of his picture-perfect life marred by his wife’s imprisonment for murder is revealed through flashbacks. Vishnu keeps this a secret as he tries to create a new life for himself and his family in this new village. Vishnu is the only one who decides to take a stand against Kattumakkan and with the help of the other school teachers and police, sends him back to jail.

Vishnu’s wife, Priya (Samyuktha Varma), is released from jail and Kattumakkan finds out about this hidden secret. Months later, when he is also released from prison, he reveals this information to the village and tries to destroy their lives but is unsuccessful.

Final harsh winds bring an end to the film with the destruction of the school and an unexpected turn of events.

Biju Menon as Vishnu gives a good performance. The helplessness he feels at the tragedies dealt with in life, is portrayed very touchingly. But Priyamvadha (Samyuktha Varma) takes the cake, with her versatile acting and the National award for Best actress. Sreenivasan and K.P.A.C. Lalitha give memorable performances even in their small roles. Music by Vidyasagar is good.

Kamal has proved time and time again his talent as a first-rate director and this is no exception. He has done a wonderful job. We rate this film as very good.
