It is the story of two brothers, their silly love affairs and family betrayal by the loved ones.

Gopinathan Nair (Jayaram) is a hard working farmer. He lives with his mother Lakshmi (KPAC Lalitha) and younger brother Dinesh (Arun). Their father (Nedumudi Venu) left them when they were kids. Gopi takes the responsibilities of the family on his shoulders. He makes sure that his brother Dinesh gets a decent college education. But for Dinesh, education was not the first thing in his priority list. He was very active in college politics, and also has a love affair with a local tea shop owner Gangadharan's (T.G.Ravi) daughter Mridula (Bhavana).

Gopi puts up with a lot nonsense created by his family members. As the older brother he sacrifices a lot for the sake of the family including postponement of his marriage. Actually he likes a local girl Sainaba (Padmapriya), a Hajiyar's daughter. Dinesh was dead against his brother's affair with Sainaba mainly because her brother Shafiq (Sudhi Joshi) is his rival at the college. As the story goes, Gopi marries Sainaba and brings her home. The rest of the movie deals with campus violence, dirty games played by political parties, murder and destruction.

Veteran storyteller Sibi Malayil tries to make a movie out of the often told common theme of "Elder children sacrificing everything for the family". The story is so predictable that there no novelty in it. He has made sure that the movie has all the usual "Masala" like romance, campus politics and violence, political parties manipulating the students, inter cast marriage and above all conflicts with in the family. Its time for a creative director like Siby Malayil, to come out with movies with creative themes. He should not make more and more of this "Old Masala" themes. He should realize that people are fed up with movies seeing the same theme in different forms. Songs by M. Jayachandran are good, especially the number 'Ishtam'.

Jayaram as usual presents an excellent performance. He practically saves the film. Bhavana and Padmapriya are there just for name sake and their talents are totally wasted. Music by Jayachandran are memorable and melodious. "Amritham" literally means "Manna from Heaven or Heavenly food". This movie is not any "Amritham". If you have some time to kill, go and see it otherwise it isn't worth.

We rate this movie  Average.
