'Akale' is inspired by the American classic play 'The Glass Menagerie' by Tennessee William. Margaret Evans ( Sheela) is an Anglo Indian widow whose husband in the Navy disappeard during one of his sail. She has two kids Neil (Prithviraj) and Rose (Geethu Mohandas).

Margaret has a tough time raising the kids with odd jobs and making small handicraft items. Neil, a dreamer wants to be a writer one day, but decides to forget his dream and help the family by taking up a factory job. Rose is slightly mentally retarded but is an affectionate girl. Margaret always worries about Rose and wants her to be married to a decent guy. Their life is totally stressed.

Neil has a friend Freddy ( Tom George) who is working with him at the factory. Margaret, thinking that Freddy could be a good alliance for Rose, forces Neil to bring Freddy home one day for dinner. But it turns out that Freddy is already engaged to be married to some one else. All these things take a beating on Rose's mental health and she is admitted in an asylum where she ends up dying.

Years later, Neil does succeed in becoming a writer.. Neil, now a middle aged man is spinning the story of his family which unfolds as a flash back movie.

Director Shyam Prasad has succeeded in making an emotionally touching theme into a good movie. The movie revolves around the four main characters and keeps close to the original in its adaptation. The roles of characters are sensitively defined. Rose's simplicity and Neil's dilemma is overwhelmingly portrayed. Sheela is excellent as an Anglo Indian mother and Geethu has performed her part with depth and range. Cinematography by S. Kumar is excellent. Music gels well with the mood of the film. As a whole the movie is an emotionally satisfying stunner. It is worth watching.

We rate this movie Good.
