Tango Charlie is a not a war movie as such but deals with the inland strife in India and gives an insight to the life of the BSF (Border security force) jawans.

It deals with the relationship between a cynical senior officer Mohammed Ali (Ajay Devgan) and his vulnerable assistant Tarun Chauhan (Bobby Deol). The story is told as a narrative from the incidents in a diary. On duty aboard their helicopter, Indian Air force pilots Squadron Leader Vikram Rathore [Sanjay Dutt] and Flight Lieutenant Shezad Khan [Suniel Shetty] spot a number of bodies lying around in the snow clad deserted mountains. Seeing that one of them is still alive they embark on a rescue mission despite bad weather conditions.

They discover a diary and the story unfolds as a journey through the life of Tarun Chauhan - his love, his innocence, vulnerability, fears, his transformation and his relationship with his senior officer the daredevil Mohammed Ali. These men fight for their country without a thought for their own lives or safety, or without a care for any reward or recognition. Sometimes not even fully understanding for what they are fighting for. The futility of it all is brought out well by the director.

The story moves in episodes- the director takes the viewers on a journey with the two main protagonists through the socio-political strife happening in different parts of India touching the Bodo up rise in Assam, Maoists rebellion in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, the riots in Gujarat and the India-Pakistan conflict at Kargil. The director has handled the narration quite deftly. Technically also the film is brilliant with good action- one or two sequences may be too violent, background score and cinematography especially through the jungles of Manipur are noteworthy. But at times the different dialects in different places may be difficult for the audience to decipher. The romantic angle and the songs just act as speed breakers.

Bobby Deol has handled his part well. The vulnerability of the character and the gradual transformation is done well. It could well be one of his best characters. But it is Ajay Devgan who steals the show with his astounding performance. This actor is sure talented. He proves yet again that he is one of the best around. Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty in their small roles are convincing. Kelly Dorjee in his supporting role is good. Tanishaa as Bobby's love angle and Nandana Sen are just okay.

Overall it is a well taken war movie, different from the usual fare with good performances. Moreover it gives a clear message of the futility of war/violence and the inevitable destruction it brings..
