Chameli is another film on prostitution- a genre which has been attempted in several Hindi films like Mandi, Bazaar etc. But this time round the theme fails to make as much an impact as the other films.

The story is narrated differently in the sense the whole story takes place on one night in an encounter between a prostitute and an investment banker. Aman Kapoor (Rahul Bose) looses his wife (Rinke Khanna) in an accident. One stormy night, as he rides on aimlessly his car breaks down near Flora fountain in Mumbai, where Chameli ( Kareena Kapoor), a hooker carries on her trade.

Aman has no other option but to share the place with her for the night. She tries to seduce him, even does a dance in the rain but Aman is not moved. Chameli, behind the sensual facade has a child like appeal and is good at heart. She pays for the education of the small kid Johnny who serves tea. Aman sees through the facade and actually feels sorry for her. He helps her out when she gets into trouble with a pimp who forces her to sleep with a man having aids. He gets too involved and all of them lands in jail. Aman uses his influence to release them.

The story concept wise is interesting. But the screenplay leaves much to be desired. The writers should have developed the concept well. The pace is really slow. Some of the sequences are well taken but lacks the flow. The climax too lacks the impact. Originally the film conceived by Anant Balani was completed by Sudhir Mishra due to his untimely death. Cinematography is good and the songs are easy on the ears especially the number 'Bhaage Re Mann'.

Performance wise Rahul Bose has done his part well. Kareena Kapoor has tried hard to get into the skin of the character but she looks much too polished to pass off as a street hooker. Yashpal Sharma as Assistant Commissioner of Police K P Singh is okay.

Overall the film is just average.
