The film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical extravagance, based on the novel "Le Fantome de l'Opera" by Gaston Leroux, is about a disfigured musical genius in a 1870 Opera House in Paris and the young soprano who he coaches, and her romance with the young Count who loves her.

The Phantom (Gerard Butler), a masked man, is a disfigured musical genius who had gone mad and roams around the Paris Opera House. The beautiful and bold Christine Daae (Emmy Rossum) steps into the spotlight as a young chorus girl who was coached by an unseen teacher to sing well. It is the Phantom who sings to her behind the mirror in her dressing room. Christine excelled on stage as a young soprano and Phantom's love and admiration for her went sky high. He is smitten and will do anything to win her heart.

Meanwhile, a wealthy, young and handsome, Raoul (Patric Wilson), a childhood companion of Christine is introduced as a new patron of the company. Now, Raoul and Christine develops a romantic relationship and Phantom realizes that his love and affection for the young woman is in jeopardy. Feeling betrayed, the Phantom kidnaps Christine and takes her to his underground lair. After he sings the show's famous love song "The Music of the Night", she was compelled to pull off his mask and was stunned with shock and awe. Now it is a love triangle and Christine has to choose between two nearly equal young lovers. Find out who will be chosen, Raoul or Phantom?

The director has stayed true to the play in the movie adaptation and does a wonderful job in translating the stage production on to the screen. Brilliant choreography, gorgeous production with attention to detail, memorable lyrics, breathtaking display of musical talent are some of the elements in the movie that will dazzle you. Gerard Butler as the Phantom, presents an excellent performance. Emmy Rossum as soprano makes a real impact. Rest of the cast members are also very talented. If you liked the play then you will love the movie. If you are a true believer of this style, you will be in bliss. It is a brilliant and beautiful musical masterpiece which fills you happiness- An Oscar worthy film.

We rate this movie Good.
