Loosely based on the novel by Isaac Asimov, 'I,Robot' is a story that takes place in Chicago in the year 2035. During that time robots are everywhere, doing all menial jobs from trash collection, cleaning, cooking and mail delivery. U.S.Robotics, the world's largest manufacturer of robots is about to introduce a new model of NS5, a powerful robot which is capable of doing most of the household jobs.

Lawrence Robertson ( Bruce Greenwood) is hoping to capture the world market with the new product. All of a sudden, the chief designer of the robot Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell) is found dead on the floor of the atrium lobby of U.S.Robotic's main building, apparently a suicide.

Dr. Lanning had designed the robots following Asimov's 3 Laws which states that (1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction allow a human being to come to harm (2) A robot must obey orders given by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law (3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Del Spooner (Will Smith), a detective with the Chicago police department starts investigation into the mysterious death of Dr.Lanning. Quickly he suspects the inventors latest creation, a robot named Sonny. Spooner uncovers a big conspiracy that brings out a full blown robot rebellion. Movie transpires some 31 years into the future with a prediction that robots are the way of future.

Movie explores about the technological ability of humankind as well as how we can protect ourselves from any disasters caused by the same technological inventions. It is a science fiction thriller but it lacks the richness of imagination. The plot is thrilling but lacks depth. Sonny, the robot is a brilliant computer graphic creation. Special effects are impressive. There are lots of twists and turns in the film. Some of the jokes are corny. Will Smith has proved that he is getting better as an actor. Movie gives a compelling vision of 2035 Chicago. Science fiction and action movie lovers will like it.

We rate this movie Average.
