The movie ' Bride and Prejudice' is the English version of the Hindi film 'Balle Balle From Amritsar To LA' which is a Bollywood style screen adaptation of Jane Austen's 19th century classic Pride and Prejudice. The movie is directed by Gurinder Chaddha, of 'Bend it like Beckham' fame.

The story begins with a shot of the lush green landscape of Amritsar, Punjab in India to the tune of 'Meri Desh Ki Dharti' from Manoj Kumar's film 'Upkar' in the background. There is a grand wedding in town.

For Mrs. Bakshi( Nadira Babbar), it is an ideal setting to find matches for her four marriageable daughters,  (Namrata Shirodkar, Aishwarya Rai, Peeya Rai Choudhuri, Meghnaa)especially Jaya and Lalitha, being the eldest. Three tourists Balraj (Naveen Andrews), Kiran (Indira Varma) both NRI's and a British friend Will Darcy ( Martin Henderson) land up for the wedding. Sparks fly when they meet Mrs. Bakshi's daughters.

Jaya the plane Jane eldest daughter has a courtship with Balraj but the main protagonists are Lalitha, the headstrong second daughter and Will Darcy who are attracted to each other. Lalitha who has definite ideas about marriage and the quiet Darcy who is flabbergasted by Indian paraphernalia has their ups and downs but love triumphs in the end..

The movie is light and entertaining to the point that it has all it takes to make it work. It is vibrant with countless songs, romance, heartbreak as well as funny moments. The script is perfect and has made the dreary Classic period novel more lively. It is a wacky version of the gripping original. Santhosh Sivan's camera captures the landscapes as well as the moods brilliantly. Music by Anu Malik is ok. But at times it gets too Hindi filmish that the English version may not go down too well with the audience..

Performance wise Nadira Babbar takes the cake as Mrs. Bakshi with her flawless performance. Aishwarya Rai looks ravishing and good in her role as the dignified yet forceful character Lalitha. Indira Varma is superb as she translates the Hindi songs to English in one breath. Nitin Ganatra [as Mr. Kohli] handles the humour with elan. The rest of the cast is adequate.

Overall this entertainer may go well with a niche crowd.
