Birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

The birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, which fall on January 23 is a nationalistic festival of West Bengal. Processions with large number of young men and girls in uniform, and military formation parade in every town and important villages are held. The main procession in Calcutta attains a length of more than three kilometers and groups of boys and girls play martial band music. The celebrations is a token of Bengal's revolutionary temper.

Subhas Chandra Bose was a great patriot and a determined fighter of national freedom. He was born on 23rd January 1897 at Cuttack (Orissa). Unlike other prominent leaders of the Indian freedom struggle, Subhas strongly believed that an armed rebellion was necessary to wrest independence from the British. Subhas Chandra Bose is popularly known as 'Netaji'. In 1943, he organized the Indian National Army (I.N.A), and gave the nation the Salutation and slogan of 'Jai Hind'. Read more
