BINGE EATING CAUSES SYMPTOMS RISK FACTORS TREATMENT

Treatment

Akin to any other disease, Binge Eating Disorder can be successfully treated. As the disorder is multifaceted, it is important to seek support and treatment from a team of health professionals including psychiatrists, nutritionists, therapists, and eating disorder and obesity specialists. Most importantly it needs the support from family and friends. The goal of treatment should be reducing overeating and bingeing episodes. If obesity is affecting your health, weight loss should be another goal.  Three types of therapies are particularly helpful in this treatment course.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy : This should be the first line of treatment method for Binge eating. It focuses on dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors involved in Binge eating. The main goal of this therapy is to give a self awareness and positive approach for using food to deal with emotions. The therapy also includes education about nutrition, healthy weight loss and relaxation techniques.

Interpersonal psychotherapy : Interpersonal therapy monitors the relationship problems and interpersonal issues which triggers compulsive eating. The therapist may try to improve the patients relationship with family and friends.

Dialectical behavior therapy : It combines Cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques with meditation. It teaches Binge eaters to accept themselves, to reduce stress and regulate their emotions. It includes both individual and group therapy sessions.

Sharing your experience with other compulsive eaters can go a long way to help you feel better.
