Symmography is the art of weaving thread across plotted points from a centre point or axis, symmetrically to get the desired design.

Materials :
›› Nails ›› Acrylic Paints
›› Wood piece 1/2" thick ›› Brushes
›› Sand paper ›› Pencils
›› Knitting Wool ›› Eraser
›› Hammer ›› Ruler
›› Pliers ›› Compass
›› Scissors ›› Protractor
›› Glue ›› Drill
›› Stain

Method :

Cut the wood (Plywood or any other) to a size that will most enhance the design. Then sand edges and surface for smooth handling. Stain the wood, apply one or more coats until the desired colour is obtained. If a painted background is desired apply as many coats of acrylic paint to obtain the colour of your choice.

Determine Nail Placement Using Protractor

Cut a piece of paper equal to the size of the wood. Mark the centre and with a compass draw a circle of desired size. Mark points for nails evenly around the perimeter. An even or odd number of nails can be decided. Place a protractor along the diameter of the circle and centered in the middle of the circle. Mark off by degrees(5,10 etc..) around the outside of the protractor.

Marking Nail Placement

Then lay a ruler so that it lines up with the center of the circle and the marks from the protractor and intersecting the outer circle you have drawn with the compass.

Drilling

Mark the point where it intersects the circle for nail placement.

ounding Nails

Transfer the pattern by drilling and pound the nails evenly as possible.

Beginning the Basic Weave

Choose the wool colour (Yellow, red, Maroon ) and begin by tying the yarn that you want, at the centre of the cirlce. Draw yarn directly across the cirlce, around the nail back and around the next to the beginning nail. Work around the circle using the basic weave either once or twice around.

Tying the Second Colour End of Second Colur of Circle

Tie second colour on to a different nail from the first and draw yarn about a third of the way around the circle around nail and back around neighbouring nail to the start of this colour. Continue to fill out circle.

Tying the Third Colour

The final colour to complete the circle should be done with the edging weave, either inside or outside the circle. If  happy with the results you can tie knots and weave ends in to finish.
