Lakshman Tila is situated on the north of Imambara complex
and on the right banks of the river Gomti. It is said to be the original
site of Lucknow. The story says that when Lord Rama returned to
Ayodhya after his 14 years of exile, he gifted the palace to his younger
brother Lakshman. Lakshman is believed to have stayed here, and the region
was later named as Lakshmanpur. That Tila, today, is known as Lakshman
Tila. The place is believed to have been one of the earliest sites
of human settlements in Lucknow. Main attraction of the place is the Alamgiri
Mosque built by Sultan Ali, the Governor of the province of Avadh, during
the reign of Aurangzeb. The mosque is a triple domed structure with slender
minarets at corners. The marvelous symmetry of form and abstemiousness
of decoration makes the mosque very attractive.
