Digital Rectal ExamA digital rectal
examination is a routine check up for abnormalities in the pelvis and lower abdomen.
A health professional inserts a lubricated, gloved hand into the rectum feels
the organs such as the bladder for abnormalities. Usually the prostate gland in
men as a part of complete physical examination and the uterus and ovaries in women
as part of a regular gynecological exam are checked. The exam may also be done
to help identify the cause of symptoms such as rectal bleeding or blood in the
stool, abdominal or pelvic pain, a change in bowel habits, or urinary problems
in men.
