Lonavla (Lonavala)- Khandala, the two hill stations preached at an altitude
of around 600m in the Western Ghats are famous for their beautiful valleys,
hills, waterfalls, lakes and forts. Situated in Pune district, at a distance
of 82kms from Thane and 106km from Mumbai, these tourist destinations
lies 5kms apart on either side of the Mumbai-Pune highway. Both these
are separated by a deep valley on one side and high hills on the other
side.
Lonavla alias 'Jewel of Sahyadri' is a good base to visit the Karla and
Bhaja rock-cut-caves, which are among the oldest and finest examples of
Hinayana Buddhists rock temple art in India. Duke's Nose, Shivaji Park,
Amruntanjan point, Kune Falls, Tiger's Leap, Sakur Plateau, Monkey Hill
are some among the attractions in Lonavala. This health resort is also
famous for jams and Chikkis, a sweet candy made locally.
Khandala, a quite small village than Lonavala, is blessed with a
picturesque ravine and surrounded by wet season waterfalls. Tugauli Lake,
Lonavala Lake and Bhushi Lake are some among the lakes here. Boating facilities
are available in these lakes.
