St. John the Baptist Church is a well-known landmark of the city, located
on the north side of Masunda lake near the Thane Station. The church,
formerly known as St. Anthony’s church was built by Portuguese
missionaries (Franciscans) under the leadership of Fr. Antonio do Porto
in 1582. When the Marathas captured Thane in 1737, all the churches in
the city were destroyed, except the St. Anthony Church. When the secular
clergy took over St. Anthony’s, they changed the name of the church
to St. John the Baptist. With the passage of time, several alteration
has been made and of that old Franciscan church only the wooden main altar,
the two side altars and the roof of the sanctuary still exists today.
The front part of the church was extended in 1965 to accommodate the ever-growing
number of parishioners.
