Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Shiv Mandir of Ambarnath also known as Ambreshwar
Shiva Temple is a 11th century temple located in Ambarnath (26kms from
Thane). This oldest temple, set near the Valdhuni river on the slope of
a barren hillock was built in 1060 AD by King Mahamandaleshwar of Shilahar
dynasty. The temple is a masterpiece of Hemadpanti style of architecture
which is done completely in black stone and lime.
The entrance hall of the temple can be accessible by three porches in
north, south and west. The main entrance is through the west door where
an idol of Nandi (vehicle of Lord) is place. One has to climb down 20
steps to go the Garba graha, i.e the sanctum sanctorum which enshrine
Lord shiva in the form of Shivalingam. The mandap of the temple comprise
of a bell shaped roof supported by an array of pillars. The beautifully
carved supporting pillars in the temple; the carved images of Shiva, Ganesha
and Nandi on the walls all showcases the creativity and craftsmanship
of the skilled workers who created this temple. Shivratri is the temple
festival held here in the month of February/ March. Ambreshwar Shiva Temple
is a protected monument maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India
