Arts include English language
and literature, classics, communication, media studies, dance and drama, languages,
art history and history. It also covers all languages and cultural studies.
There are also many new subjects classified as arts subjects such as peace studies
and women's studies.
Humanities
cover the areas concerned with human thought, feeling and creativity such as
philosophy and theology. Most humanities and arts courses last 3 years and lead
to a BA degree. Some courses in Scotland after 4 years of study can lead to
an MA. Some design degrees which have a technical aspect such as textiles and
product design can lead to a BSc.
Arts
and humanities subject can be studied as a single subject degree or combined
with one or more subjects. The range of subjects offered can be very wide and
students may combine subjects from other areas. Some universities offer placements
or exchange programmes with overseas universities. Most arts and humanities
courses are taught through seminars and lectures. There is a compulsory project
in the final year of the course.
