The Union Territory of Puducherry (earlier Pondicherry), a spiritual beach town used to be a French settlement comprising of
Karaikal, Mahe and
Yanam other than Puducherry itself.
Karaikal town is surrounded by Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu, Mahe and its
villages covering 9 sq km is surrounded by the Kerala state, and Yanam covering
30 sq.km lies within the East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. Karaikal is
about 150 km south of Pondicherry and Yanam about 840 km north-east of
Pondicherry on the Andhra Coast and Mahe lies almost parallel to Pondicherry,
653 km away on the west coast on the Arabian Sea.
The old French flavor is visible in Pondicherry with its well-laid gardens, magnificent churches,
heritage monuments and mansions, and clean and wide roads, which still carry French
names. Over the years, Pondicherry has emerged as one of the most sought after tourist destinations in India. The city is renowned for its palm-fringed beaches, scenic fishing villages, serene
backwaters, Aurobindo Ashram, Yoga Festival, and the international city of
Auroville.

The best time to visit Pondicherry is between the months of October to March.
December through February is the highest tourist season when the climate is most
pleasant.
