Even though diarrhea comes off as a less severe illness, it is not. It is the third leading cause of child mortality in India and is responsible for 13% of all deaths in children under five years of age. In fact, according to Lancet Medical Journal, India and Nigeria together account for 42% of global under-five deaths due to diarrhea. It is a global health concern that must be tackled diligently by people and authorities. The first step is to maintain hand hygiene by using clinically acclaimed products like Dettol hand wash.

Diarrhea is a highly common ailment that everyone has gone through during his or her lifetime. It is typically transmitted by ingesting contaminated foods or drinks, person-to-person contact, or through contaminated hands. Thus, avoiding close contact, consuming hygienic foods and thoroughly washing hands with Dettol hand wash is highly recommended. In situations, when washing hands is not feasible, use Dettol hand sanitizer instead. It is the perfect pocket accessory in the modern world.

In most cases, diarrhea only lasts for a few days and is treated quickly. However, in some cases diarrhea can last for some weeks, indicating a serious medical problem.

Let’s take a look at diarrhea symptoms and how to prevent them:

Symptoms of Diarrhea

The primary symptom of diarrhea is loose and watery stool that occurs three or more times in a day. However, it is not all, and someone with diarrhea may experience the following along with watery stool:

- Nausea
- Pain or cramping in the abdomen
- Loss of control of the bowels

If an infection causes diarrhea, the symtoms include:

-Vomiting
- Bloody stool
- Fever and chills
- Dizziness and light-headedness
- Dehydration and malabsorption are common when someone has diarrhea. Malabsorption is characterized by bloating, weight loss, gas, and loose and foul-smelling bowel movements.

When to See a Doctor?

Since diarrhea causes malabsorption and dehydration – it can become highly dangerous. While occasional bouts of diarrhea are frequent among people of all ages, extreme dehydration is fatal and must be taken care of immediately. Seeing a doctor becomes mandatory when:

- Diarrhea is accompanied by a fever higher than 102 F
- Diarrhea lasts for more than two days
- Severe and unbearable pain in the rectum or abdomen
- Six or more watery and loose stools in 24 hours
- Frequent vomiting along with diarrhea
- Signs of dehydration

Young children, toddlers and infants should be taken to doctor if diarrhea symptoms last for more than 24 hours. Adults with a compromised immune system should seek immediate medical care if there are any diarrhea symptoms.

How to Prevent Diarrhea?

Since diarrhea is contracted by contaminated food, drinks, hands and person-to-person contact – it is essential to contain these risk factors.
