The Government museum, one of the oldest museum in India, is situated at Kasturba Gandhi Road near Cubbon park. The original block was designed and built by Colonel Sankey in 1876 and in later years several wings have been added to it. Opened to public in 1886, it contains 18 galleries including Neolithic findings from the Chandravalli excavations and from the Indus valley, especially Mohanjedaro antiquities. As the museum displays a huge collection of archeological artifacts, it is also known as State Archeological Museum. The museum also houses a unique collection of scuptures, inscriptions, paintings, icons, antique jewellery, textiles, coins, miniature paintings etc. Opens to public from 10 am to 5pm except Wednesdays.
