The Government museum, one of the oldest museum in India,
is situated at Kasturba Gandhi Road near Cubbon park. The original block
was designed and built by Colonel Sankey in 1876 and in later years several
wings have been added to it. Opened to public in 1886, it contains 18
galleries including Neolithic findings from the Chandravalli excavations
and from the Indus valley, especially Mohanjedaro antiquities. As the
museum displays a huge collection of archeological artifacts, it is also
known as State Archeological Museum. The museum also houses a unique collection
of scuptures, inscriptions, paintings, icons, antique jewellery, textiles,
coins, miniature paintings etc. Opens to public from 10 am to 5pm except
Wednesdays. |
