Ganga Festival or Ganga Mahotsav is a five day long event held every year
in association with the Dev Deepavali. It is celebrated during the Hindu
month of Kartik Purnima (November-December) on the banks of river
Ganges on the belief that God come down from Heaven to take a bathe in
the holy Ganges. The festival is really a celebration to rejuvenate and
realize the earliest glory and elegance of the river Ganga.
The main attraction of the festival is the floating of the thousands
of brightly-lit colourful earthen lamps on lotus leaves in the river at
night which gives Ganges a mystic look. During the festive days, large
number of devotees visits the bathing ghats in the Ganges and a holy dip
by chanting the Vedic hymns. Various cultural programmes like boat race,
martial arts etc have also been conducted as a part of the festival. The
festival also offers an opportunity to the music and dance lovers to enjoy
the lively performances of the famous artistes. Large number of people
irrespective of castes, classes, communities, and nationalities, from
all over the places attend this auspicious festival with great enthusiasm
and happiness.
