Sprawl over an area of 3 sq km, Nawabganj bird sanctuary is situated 45
kms from the city on Kanpur-Lucknow highway. Established in 1984 by the
Government of Uttar Pradesh, the sanctuary surrounded by a shallow lake
is the home to several migratory and resident water-birds. Greylag Goose,
Pintail, Cotton teal, Red Crested Pochard, Gadwall, Shoveller, Coot, Mallard,
Spotwill, Sarus Crane, Painted Stork, Peacock, White Ibis, Dabchick, Whisling
teal, Open billed stork are some among the migratory and local birds found
here. The park is occupied with reptiles like Cobra, Viper, Krait, Ratsnake
and Water snakes and fishes like Katla, Mangur, Saul, Sindhi, Kavai etc.
Besides these, there is a small deer park comprising spotted deer with
curved horns and barking deer.
The Sanctuary is a paradise for photographers and birdwatchers.
It has an information center to enhance the knowledge of visitors about
birds, their behavior and habitats. The centre has provision to show documentaries
associated to wildlife.Best season to visit the place is from November
to March.
