Gurupurabs is the celebration of the births and martyrdom
of Sikh Gurus. Three main Gurupurabs celebrated are the birth anniversaries
of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind and the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev. Guru
Nanak Dev’s birthday is celebrated in November on the full
moon day of Kartik by the devotees with great devotion.It is celebrated
by a non-stop reading of the Adi Granth starts 2 days before the
day of Gurupurab and religious rituals are held and hymns from the Granth
Sahib are chanted. Large number of People participate in the Processions through
the towns by singing and praying , buildings are beautifully
illuminated at night during this day. Guru Arjan Dev’s martyrdom
day is celebrated in the month of May/June and sweetened-water with
milk (kachi lassi) is distributed to the people. Guru Tegh Bahadur’s
martyrdom and and Guru Gobind Singh’s birthday are celebrated
in December/January and Langar is distributed on these occasions
in gurdwaras.
