| Hassan, the fourth largest city of Karnataka state and
the Headquarters of Hassan district is a pleasant, busy little town named
after the presiding deity, goddess 'Hasanamba'. The city was founded in
the 11th century by Channa Krishnappa Naik. Located at an altitude of
957 above the sea level on the national highway, linking Mangalore and
Bangalore, Hassan is the most convenient base and the nearest railhead
to explore Belur, Halebid and Sravanabelagola, the tourist centers of
great antiquity. Apart from being a center of transport and commerce,
the district is a major education center and the home of Master Control
Facility of ISRO. Known for its salubrious climate, Hassan accounts for
80% of India's coffee production and exports.
