First of all, I would like to introduce a re-orientation of certain nuances in perception. Basically, what you intend to convey is the lack of capacity to differentiate colors, so it is not at all about color blindness. In a positive note, some sort of deficiency in vision, that's all, which generally doesn't pose much of a problem except in situations when information is color coded. This situation can be overcome with effective data visualizations using visuals with patterned backgrounds, selection and styling of map data to support different geographical information applications. Recently, there are efforts to re-design the color schemes used in map making so that the maps are readable to a larger cross-section of the society. More people are realizing to make maps at the same level of perception of world as everyone else. These new mapping products have increased functionality leveraging greater freedom of usage.
Cartography is an option for you as a topic for your thesis and career. Your difference in vision perception can be an asset to realize the methodologies to overcome the situation. On the basis of your own circumstances can propose ways to help others to overcome the situation. You can surely complete the Ph.D. with good track record with publications in Journals having high impact factor. You can pursue a career in teaching also.
