Making your Indian passport doesn't have to be done through the passport office, especially if it isn't located in the neighbourhood. The Indian Government, along with multiple private parties, came up with various websites to create passports online, making the process a lot more convenient and saving time.

People can log onto this website to begin the passport process. Although the documentation is handled online, there is a verification process which means errors would not be tolerated. Other than filling out the right forms, other details needed are proof of address, identification proof, date of birth with documentation, educational qualifications, and photographs in the right specifications. These would then have to be uploaded to the website, either as scans or images.

Before taking the process further, there is a fee that has to be paid. Payments can be handled through net banking, debit card, or various other options, depending on the portal being used. Charges range from a few hundred to thousands depending on the type of passport being created. The details on the forms have to match the supporting documentation as well, otherwise, your application can be rejected and you would have to start all over.

There is a backend verification process that goes through the uploaded information with a fine tooth comb to verify everything. Even the dispatch of the passport is handled through the mail and sent directly to your house. All you have to do is sort through your documents and get everything in order, beyond that you do not have to leave your house throughout the entire passport process.

According to a survey conducted in November 2014, about 60 million Indian citizens hold valid passports. In the year 2014 itself India issued more than 10 million passports, which is a number so large that only China and USA managed to top it. The Indian passport is the 81st most powerful passport in the world.
