Munnar: The epitome of everything that’s beautiful

The confluence of beautiful, mighty and towering snow capped mountains, the freshness of sweeping green fields and a breathtaking display of nature in all its glory – Munnar cannot be described any better than that.

One of the highly popular and most visited hill stations in the south Indian state of Kerala, Munnar is located amid the southern Western Ghats; a paradise for tourists. With greenery and a perpetual pleasant weather, the hill station has attracted several vacationers, and continues to do so, over the years. Munnar sees the convergence of three rivers – Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala – which is also how the hill station got its name. Development of the hill station can largely be attributed to the British era and Fields of tea plantations and greenery underline the exquisiteness of Munnar.

Where to go

The hill station houses several waterfalls including Pallivasal Falls and Chinnakanal that are nothing short of spectacular and a definite treat for nature lovers. The Tea Museum is yet another breathtaking natural marvel, which highlights the practice of tea plantation in the area. The Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered species, can be found in the Eravikulam National Park, considered the most visited and principal tourist attractions in the hill station.

For those who love to engage in a bit of adventure like trekking and biking, the Anamudi Peak serves as an ideal getaway. Hailed as the highest peak in south India, the Anamudi Peak, a towering almost 2700 meter high peak, provides adventure enthusiasts an opportunity to trek – however, tourists would need to seek permission from the Forest Department, Native Planet notes.

Weather in Munnar

Munnar's pleasant and cool climate, which remains throughout the year, has been known to be one of the primary attractions of the hill station. Nevertheless, the best time to visit Munnar is known to be October, when the temperature ranges between a comfortable 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. As the calendar progresses into the months of winter, the temperature drops slightly, remaining pleasurable nevertheless, between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. In April, mercury levels escalate to reach maximum of 25 degrees Celsius. The summers, though, can get a little too warm with temperatures hovering around the 30 degrees Celsius mark.

How to reach

For those planning to fly, the nearest airport is Cochin International Airport, located roughly 110 kilometers from Munnar. From here, one can hail a cab to reach their destination. The Madurai International Airport, approximately 140 kilometers away, serves as an alternative.

The closest railheads to reach Munnar are Aluva, Ernakulam Railway Station and Madurai Railway Station, located 110, 130 and 135 kilometers away. Tourists can hire a taxi and reach the hill station.

However, the best way to reach Munnar is by bus. State buses ply to and fro from various cities and towns in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
