State Museum (Government Archaeological Museum)
 

The State Museum alias Government Archaeological Museum, formerly known as Bhopal Museum, is located on the picturesque Shyamla Hills, near to the Museum of Man and the Regional Science Centre. Devoted to archaeology, the State Museum, established in 1964 exhibits the comprehensive rich cultural heritage of Madhya Pradesh and is a treasure house of antiquities such as coins, sculptures, terracotta, paintings, handicrafts etc. 

The categorized art and artifacts in the State Museum are displayed in its seventeen galleries and some among the galleries includes : The State Museum consists of seventeen galleries, which includes Numismatics Gallery with a huge collection of coins; The Bagh gallery displaying the paintings of various schools and copies of paintings from the Bagh Caves near Mandu; Musical Instruments Gallery that preserve some of the rare musical instruments; Fossils gallery housing a large collection of fossil remains from the pre-historic sites; Royal Art Gallery exhibiting the artifacts from the personal collection of the Nawabs of Bhopal and other objects of arts and crafts, figurines, tribal handicrafts etc. 

Other added attractions of the state museum are the colossal statue of Lord Buddha, exquisitely carved figure of Khajuraho's romantic couples, magnificent statue of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Brahma, LordVishnu and Lord Shiva etc. 

The State Museum is opened on all days from 10 am to 5 pm except on Mondays and Government holidays.

state museum has a rich collection from madhya pradesh.one can study the historical development from pre history to the freedom movement.thanks to the officers of the museum.
