Ganesh Mahotsav/ Ganesh Chaturthi

 

Ganesh Mahotsav/ Ganesh Chaturthi held on the 4th day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapad (August - September) is the biggest and most important festival in Pune. The festival is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesh/ Ganapati (God of wisdom),  the main deity of the Marathi people. The festival is celebrated for 5 to11 days till Ananta Chatudashi. Main attraction of the festival is Visarjan or the immersion of the idols of Ganapati in water. The devotees buy Ganesh idols made of clay or metal in different sizes and install in their houses. They worship the Lord for ten days and then taken out the idol in procession and immersed in the well or nearby river. It is said that keeping the idol at home after 10 day is inauspicious. During the festival many cultural events are organized, attend by a large number of People. People wear new cloths and make delicious food.
