St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church

St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church popularly known as Niranam Church is situated about 9 kms away from the headquarters of the Thiruvalla Revenue Division. This famous ancient Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in India is believed to be one among the seven and a half churches built by St. Thomas Apostle in AD 54. The present church was constructed in the year 1912, and was reinforced during 2000.

Of the 5 altars, the main altar at the center, in the name of St. Mary is used for usual services of the church. The altar on the northern side is consecrated to St. George and that on the southern side to St. Behanan. To the front of the main altar, there are two smaller altars, one on the northern side devoted of St. Thomas and other on the southern side to St. Stephen. These altars are also the shrines of Marthoma II and Marthoma V. In front of the church, there is a huge, tall granite cross that is located at the right side of the entrance. A statue of St. Mary carved in marble and another in pure gold are the proud possessions of the church. Other attractions are the exquisite mural paintings, 500 years old vase and equally old brass lamps, relics of St. Thomas, remnants of the old church, the golden cross etc.

Several feasts are held in the church and the most important among these is the feast of Assumption of St Mary (Vaangipu perunnaal) celebrated on 15th August every year. On September 8th, the fast of Nativity of St Mary ( Ettu nompu ) is also celebrated on a large scale. Other feasts held here are the feast of St Thomas on 21st December, feast of St. Behanan on 27th December and the feasts of Marthoma II and Marthoma V on 10th May.
