Aranmula

Aranmula Aranmula, a small village on the shores of river Pamba is located 16kms from Pathanamthitta and 10km from Chenganoor on the Thiruvanthapuram-Kottayam route. The place is famous for the metal mirror known as 'aranmula kannadi', Sree Parthasarathi temple, its annual Aranmula Uthrittathi Snake boat race (Pampa Palliyodam race) and a cultural centre named Vijnana Kala Vedi. Aranmula was declared a Heritage village by the central government, and a Heritage museum and a reference library has been set up here.

Aranmula Kannadi noted for its secretive construction, is a unique craft work which is not found anywhere else in the world. Made of bell metal instead of glass, the techniques of making this mirror is passed through generations to the traditional craftsmen of the region. The manufacturing of this metal mirror started as early as the eighteenth century. Believed to be the mirror of Goddess Parvathy, it is thought to bring luck, wealth and prosperity to those who keep it. An alloy of copper and white lead is mixed in a particular ratio to make this non-refractive mirror.
