The Mrugavani National park covering an area of 3.60 sq. km ( 700 acres) was
established in October, 1994 near Himayatsagar lake at a distance of 25 kms
from Hyderabad.
The undulating topography of the park has rocky exposures
of the Deccan trap formation and the vegetation is tropical dry deciduous
forest of degraded nature interspersed with woodlands and grasslands. Over
600 plant species including herbs, shrubs, climbers and trees like Teak, Rosewood,
Sandalwood, Neem, Bamboo etc are found here.
The fauna comprises of wild boar,
jackals, foxes, porcupines, Black naped Hare, Monitor lizards, Forest Cat, Civet
Cat, Mongoose, Cheetal or Spotted deer, Sambar etc and a wide variety of reptiles
including Pythons, Cobra, Rat Snakes, Russell’s Viper, Monitor Lizard etc. Over 100 species of birds
have been identified in the park including Peacocks, Quails, Warblers, Babblers,
Flower Peckers, Partridges, Lapwings, Ducks and Curlews.
The climate is pleasant for most parts of the year. The park has a high view
point and a watch tower to watch the animals at close quarters. Snake shows
are conducted for tourists. The park has a well-stocked library, an Environmental
Education Center with an auditorium and a museum with wildlife exhibits.
