Gurdwara Chheharta Sahib is located near the village of Guru ki Vadali
at a distance of 7kms west of Amritsar on Amritsar - Gurusar Sultan Road.
The village is the birth place of the Sixth Guru, Hargobind Sahib, son
of Guru Arjan Dev. Built within a 6 acre walled compound, the gurdwara
consists of a divan hall and above this hall there is a square sanctum
with a lotus dome topped by a gold plated pinnacle. In front of the hall,
a 25 metre tall flagposts can be seen on either side which is hoisted
by two Sikh flags. The main festival celebrated here is Basant Panchami
which falls on the fifth day of the bright half of the month of Magh (end
of January or beginning of February).
A big well was constructed here by Guru Arjan Dev Ji to celebrate the
birth of his son. Known as Chheharta (chhe-six , harta- wheel), this well
with six Persian wheels which is used to draw out the water helped in
removing water scarcity in the region. The Gurudwara was named after this
well. Now the well has been covered, but its water is still pumped to
feed the main tank of the Gurdwara.
