Maa Bhagwati Temple, situated about 7kms from the city
center at Chhend Housing Colony near SOS childrens village is considered
as a great place of worship. The small hill occupying the temple is located
in a picturesque setting surrounded by different types of trees with a
clean environment. The main ritual of the temple is the 'Yaga' - performed
daily with pure ghee and the 'Chandi Paath' - the recital of Devi Mahatmyam.
Legend has it that, earlier the place (where the temple is now situated)
was occupied with an ashram established by the great sage Paraser. The
sage got married to Satyawati who was a daughter of fisherman. It is also
said that Vedavyas, who had written the great Mahabharata, was the son
of Paraser and Satyawati. When Maa Bhagwati Temple was constructed in
the year 1993, some earthen pots filled with ashes was found from depth
of foundation of the temple, which were buried at the time of Paraser
Ashram.
