Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Rajarani Temple formerly known as Indreshwara
Temple is one among the famous temples in Bhubaneswar, situated towards
the north-east of Lingaraj temple. Believed to be built in the 11th century
(1100 AD), Rajarani temple also known as 'Love Temple' is a personification
of elegance and loveliness adorned with wonderful carvings of the female
figures and couples. The temple, sit amidst in a picturesque setting surrounding
by well maintained garden, was built with red gold sandstones locally
known as rajrani and hence derived the name Rajarani temple.
Facing to the eastern direction, Rajarani temple consists of a 17.9m
high sanctum (deul) which is elaborately decorated with figures involved
in daily chores. The walls and pillars of the temple are ornamented with
stunning nymphs, lions, elephants and amorous couples. It also has the
figures of various postures and forms of Yama, the god of death. Rajarani
Temple is a nice place to view the verdant beauty of ancient sculptures.
Rajarani Temple remains open from 6 am to 6 pm on all days. Entry fees
are Rs 5/- for Indians and Rs. 100/- for foreigners. There is no entry
fee for children below 15 years. Photography is permitted, but for taking
video one must have to pay Rs.25/-
