Bharat Bhawan literally means 'Abode or Home of India',
situated atop Shyamla Hills, at a distance of 3kms from the city center,
on the banks of upper lake is a multi art center set up to create an interactive
proximity between the verbal, visual and performing arts. This unique
national institutes in India was inaugurated on 13th February 1982 by
Shrimati Indira Gandhi the then Prime Minister of India. Designed by the
renowned Goan architect Charles Correa, Bharat Bhawan is regarded as one
of the most important centers for the preservation of traditional folk
art. The center houses a museum of the arts , an art gallery, a workshop
for fine arts, a repertory theatre, indoor and outdoor auditoria, rehearsal
room, and libraries of Indian poetry, classical and folk music, which
highlights and presents the works of different artists.
The different wings of Bharat Bhawan are Roopankar - museum of fine arts;
Rangmandal - a repertory; Vagarth - center of Indian poetry; Anahad -
library of classical and folk music; Chhavi - center of classical cinema
and Nirala Srijanpeeth.
Roopankar- Bharat Bhawan Roopankar Museum of Fine arts is the only museum
of its kind in India which houses contemporary folk and tribal art together
with urban art. Roopankar Museum has three galleries namely the Tribal
art gallery, Modern art gallery and Rangdarshni gallery and about 6,000
tribal and folk art objects and nearly 2,500 urban art works are exhibited
here. Roopankar Museum also consists of a ceramic workshop, litho workshop
and facilities for stone craft and metal casting.
Rangmandal - This center for theatre and sustained theatre movements
consists of 2 theatres; Antrang - the indoor theatre and Bahirang - the
outdoor theatre. Numerous plays and stage shows are held here. Rangmandal
also has an impressive theatre library and data bank.
Vagartha - A centre of Indian poetry, which provides an excellent platform
to the writers for interaction through lecture, recitation, translation
and publication. Vagartha house a library with a rich collection of more
than 13000 books in different languages.
Anahad - The center for Indian classical, tribal and folk music, Anahad
organises several series of classical and folk music and dance concerts.
Anahad possesses an archival collection of two thousand hours of audio
and video recordings, books on music and dance and over a hundred long
playing records of foreign music to aid reference and research.
Chhavi- This centre for classic cinema, organizes the screenings of the
classical films from all over the world.
Nirala Srijanpeeth - The center for creative writing, organized several
literary events.
